Bar Harbor Village Green

The Carol Dyer Memorial Luminaria Evening is a ceremony of hope and remembrance to honor cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle with cancer. The annual event was started by friends of Carol Dyer, the beloved children’s librarian for the Jesup Memorial Library, who died of a brain tumor in 2001.

Luminarias are small paper bags with lighted candles inside, weighted down with sand. They typically have “In Memory of [Name]” or “In Honor of [Name]” written on them. Each one represents a life and the hope for a cancer-free world. Hundreds of personalized luminarias will be placed along the Village Green paths, lighting up the night in a stunning display. Each person’s name and hometown will be announced during the ceremony by volunteer MC, Chris Popper of WDEA AM 1370.

For safety reasons this year, we encourage contactless purchasing of luminarias ahead of time as there will be only one purchase table available. Masks will be required for all who attend. Guests will be asked to continue walking at a social distance to view the luminarias as a “moving” tribute.

Luminaria can be purchased online here. If you have a larger order, you can call Abby at 207-288-5008.
