The Benni Mutual Aid Program

The Benni Mutual Aid Program encompasses all of YWCA MDI's mutual aid work, providing support to meet community needs across Mount Desert Island and the surrounding counties we serve.

In honor of former Executive Director Benni McMullen, who served at YWCA MDI for 39 years, this program provides critical support to our most vulnerable neighbors.

During her 39 years at YWCA MDI, Benni McMullen made an indelible impact on the MDI community and YWCA staff.

Benni was best known for offering women "a leg up" through difficult times — and we believe she'd be proud that the YWCA’s mutual aid program continues her legacy in helping women and neighbors in crisis.

What Can We Help With?

We offer a range of mutual aid resources to meet the needs of our community. Please reach out directly if there is a critical need you or a neighbor needs support with and we will do our best to find availble resources.

  • Providing critical financial aid to women in need.

    In honor of former Executive Director Benni McMullen, this mutual aid fund was established in 2020 and offers one-time financial support to women living in Hancock County, Eastern Washington County, and Western Waldo County.

  • Our Heater Donation Program is made possible by the generosity of an anonymous donor who is committed to ensuring that none of our neighbors go without heat during Maine's long winters. Thanks to this support, YWCA MDI is able to provide heaters to those in need throughout our community.

  • YWCA MDI hopes to kick off a Summer Cooling Donation Program in May 2027 to help our neighbors stay safe and comfortable during the warmer months. Our goal is to provide free box fans and window A/C units to seniors and low-income community members who need them most.

  • The Pay It Forward Fund is supported by an anonymous donor who hopes to inspire a ripple effect of kindness throughout our community. This mutual aid fund provides case-by-case support for small, critical needs that don't qualify for other grants or scholarships.

    The only requirement to receive funds is to commit to — and share — how you plan to pay it forward for someone else.
