Tackling Bias in Healthcare

Dr. Angela Marshall to speak on tackling bias in healthcare October 3rd

Nationally recognized physician, speaker, and author Angela Marshall, MD, will be on MDI in October to speak about tackling bias in healthcare to empower patients and providers and improve health outcomes. YWCA of Mount Desert Island is teaming with MDI Hospital and other community partners to present an author reception and book talk at Jesup Memorial Library on Thursday, October 3 at 6 PM.

Many forms of bias can affect the healthcare we receive, including inherent cognitive biases and unconscious attitudes based on race, ethnicity, age, social class, disability, education, and even weight. Dr. Marshall discusses all these variables to help increase awareness among patients and professionals alike.

Angela Marshall, MD is the author of Dismissed: Tackling the Biases That Undermine Our Healthcare. A leading expert in women’s health and healthcare equity, she is a board-certified internist, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and the founder of Comprehensive Women’s Health, a primary-care practice for women in the Washington, DC area. Dr. Marshall is also a past chair of the board of directors for Black Women's Health Imperative, the oldest national nonprofit aimed at achieving health equity for Black women around the globe.

The event begins with an author reception at 6 PM, followed by a book talk and signing from 6:30 to 8:00. A limited number of books will be available for purchase from Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop. The book talk will also be livestreamed, but healthcare providers who attend in person can receive CME credit for the presentation.

The community is invited to this free public event, and free childcare will be available at YWCA MDI, next door to Jesup Memorial Library. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendees: https://www.jesuplibrary.org/events/marshall

YWCA MDI, MDI Hospital, and Jesup Memorial Library are presenting this event in conjunction with Northern Light Health, Healthy Acadia, MDI Racial Equity Working Group, Juneteenth Downeast, Greater Bangor Area Branch NAACP, Bar Harbor Congregational Church, and Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shops.
